MULTIPLICITY is an atlas of migrant worker housing surrounding FoxConn’s Longhua Campus, a prototypical urban condition in which the assembly line is multiplied across 450,000 bodies through processes of manufacturing, assembling, eating, sleeping, and exportation. Interpolating data from GIS, Google/Apple/Baidu maps, site visits, interviews, and online media/journalism, the atlas maps and illustrates the spatial typologies from which Shenzhen is composed: old villages including religious buildings and Feng Shui woods, “new” villages from the Shenzhen’s opening in the 1990s, and mega-industrial parks from the subsequent international export market. MULTIPLICITY is finally an architectural projection, imagining a future in which community grows upwards through parasitic structures, outcompeting the hyper-modernity of the globalized factory to create an adaptive social and physical interface for Chinese migrant workers.
