LARGESSE is a speculative plan to protect lower Manhattan from 20’ of sea level rise and future storm surge through engineered landscape. Constructed along the premise that giving the people of New York a world-class public space as a reward for the warming climate represents a surreal oxymoron, the masterplan employs a charged, irrational formal language, uncanny spatial experiences, and indulgent program to feed a generation for which nature will never be wild. Embedded within the mountainscape are retention basins for freshwater flooding; freshwater exits the city through a system of flood gates.
